As a business owner I am always looking for ways to improve and elevate my client experience. I absolutely love my brides and serving them on their wedding day, and I truly want them to have the best experience. Part of that is having the right mindset.
During a wedding day, I interact with so many people from the bride and groom, to parents, grandparents, vendors, bridal party, guests, etc. The list could go on and on! Since I am in the “public” eye during the wedding day I am very mindful of how I act, what I say, and what I do. You should be asking yourself these three questions every time you go to a shoot (any shoot, not just weddings):
What do they see?
What do they hear?
What do they experience?
(Honestly, I didn’t come up with these questions. I was listening to an Andy Stanley sermon where he mentioned these questions in reference to his church and welcoming visitors. Though these questions are perfect in reference to a business!)
Your mindset should be to serve your clients with the best of your abilities. And in doing so, you should display an attitude of respect, authenticity, and care.
You should be mindful of not only how your clients SEE you but everyone else involved with the shoot. Do people see you rushing around? Being stressed out? Being demanding? Or do they see you taking the time to talk to grandma for a minute as the bridesmaids are getting ready? Do they see you being calm under pressure? Do they see you being confident in your decisions? People are watching you, even if you are not aware of it. You should always present yourself in the best manner.
People are watching and LISTENING! Honestly, I have other vendors come up to me in the middle of a wedding and tell me that they don’t like the venue or the set-up, or disagreed with the bride and groom about something, or just complain. If a vendor complains to me about something, I am less likely to promote them and their business. I understand things can happen and emotions can run high on a wedding day, but that is not the time or place to complain.(Can you imagine if a family member overheard vendors complaining?!!) You also have the chance of working in front of multiple potential clients. Complaining or bad-mouthing another vendor, the bride’s choices, or family members’ decisions is not going to win over anyone!
And lastly what do people EXPERIENCE? People remember experiences over things. For example, you can probably recall your trip to Disney World when you were 10 years old, but you likely have a vague memory of the shoes you owned at the age. Make sure that you are providing not only clients but also the people around you a positive experience.
Before every shoot, go through these questions: What do they see? What do they hear? What do they experience? And I promise you will end up with the right mindset to rock out that photo session!
