When I started my business a few years ago, I wanted advice on everything and anything related to running a business. I emailed my wedding photographers, talked to people at conferences, and reached out to other photographers I admired. I received a lot of different advice, some of it good and some of it bad.
I thought I would share some of the good and bad advice I received along with some tidbits of my own.
Some of the best advice I was given:
-
When you start a business you need to make it a legal business and register with the state commission and your city. As a business owner you should also have a business license.
-
If you are just starting out you might not be able to afford it, but business insurance is also a must.
- Have a contract made for every shoot.
- Have a separate bank account for your business funds.
- Only use business funds to purchase items for your business.
- Have a website-you need somewhere for potential clients to see your work
- Have at least one professional headshot of yourself.
- Have a name and logo for your business, the more timeless it is the better.
Some of the worst advice I was given:
- Eat Ramen noodles- no joke, several people have told me this and I am not a believer in sacrificing your health (or your family’s health) over a business.
- Have your husband switch jobs so he can make more money for you to pursue your dreams. I believe in supporting each other in our dreams, but this advice was just too much (and really unrealistic!)! My husband would have have to quit his career and find a really high paying job (that he probably wouldn’t like) for me to run my business, that is just not pratical! I didn’t think this was appropriate advice either!
- Give up anything extra in your personal finances to help your business grow. From a legal and a bookkeeping aspect that is just not a good idea!
I help the “good” adivce helps and the “bad” adivce gives you a laugh!
